Brian D'Urso

Dr. Brian R. D'Urso received his Ph.D. in Physics in 2003 from Harvard University, having received his Bachelor of Science from Caltech in 1998. He went on to serve at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a Wigner Fellow in 2003, and remained as a member of the ORNL Research Staff until 2008. In 2009, he became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh, remaining a joint faculty member at ORNL.

His current research involves microstructured and nanostructured surfaces fabricated by novel techniques. His interests also include precision measurements and the quantum limit of micromechanical and nanomechanical devices.

Jen-Feng Hsu

Jen-Feng Hsu is a graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He received his Bachelor of Science in physics from National Central University, Taiwan. On 7/29/16, Jen will be defending his thesis titled "Cooling the Center-of-Mass Motion of a Diamond Nanocrystal in a Magneto-Gravitational Trap." Beside Physics, he likes swimming, cooking and eating.

Charlie Lewandowski

Charlie Lewandowski is a graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. In 2015, he received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh. His current research involves optics design, computational physics, and testing fundamental quantum mechanics. In his free time, he enjoys golfing and video games — particularly DotA 2.

Jen-Feng Hsu

Brad Slezak is a graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering. Currently, he is working on cooling the motion of a macroscopic object to its quantum mechanical ground state, and performing a precision measurement of the gravitationaal constant, G. He enjoys playing golf and riding his bike in his free time.

Mia

Mia Rossi is an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh currently majoring in physics. Her project is graphene synthesis, including substrate preparation.

Steve Hemmerle

Steve Hemmerle is an undergraduate student (posing next to the recently renovated diamond turning machine) at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in physics. He is currently working on the wire design to optimize the cooling of the particle's motion. In addition to physics, his interests include playing sports and video games, as well as updating webpages.

Elliot Jenner

Elliot Jenner is a graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He received his Bachelor of Science from The Rochester Institute of Technology in 2007. He has also worked at the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

His current research involves the ordering of Aluminum Oxide and its applications. His interests are in nanosystems and structures. He is also a violinist and a member of the University Fencing Club and the University Photography Club. In April 2015, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with his doctoral thesis titled Multiscale Structured Spaces and Their Effect On Drag and Fluid Flow.

Shonali Dhingra

Shonali Dhingra is a graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. She hails from India and earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Physics in 2006 and 2008, respectively, from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, India. Her Master specialization was in 'Electronics: Devices and Circuits'.

Her current research project involves the creation of MEMS/NEMS mechanical oscillators, and the study of their behavior at sub-4K temperatures. In April 2015, she graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and accepted a postdoctoral scholar position at UCLA to study neurophysics. Physics aside, her interests are reading Literature and Philosophy, biking and hiking.
